Grand Annual Collection for WCCC

The Grand Annual Collection for the Whaling City Catholic Community is happening now. A letter from Father Mike has been sent out asking for consideration and support in this effort.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
– St. Teresa of Calcutta

Dear Parishioner,

Greetings in Christ! Earlier this month, we gathered for a special Mass at St. Lawrence to mark the 25th anniversary of the passing of St. Teresa of Calcutta. It made me reflect on her historic visit to New Bedford back in 1995. Many of us were there for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, the chance to be in the presence of someone whose life of simple service touched the hearts of millions. St. Teresa famously said, “The way you help heal the world is you start with your own family.” I write to you today to humbly ask that you please consider sustaining our beloved parish families through your support of our Grand Annual Collection for the Whaling City Catholic Community.

Funds raised through this year’s collection will help provide much-needed upkeep and will benefit all our parishes. In general, the costs of keeping our three churches running – paying utility bills, landscaping, cleaning up after every winter storm, etc. – continue to increase each year. Each church also has its own specific projects we would like to accomplish to keep them going strong. At Holy Name, the parish center’s roof is nearly 50 years old and is in desperate need of replacing. St. Lawrence (which has now entered its THIRD century!) needs its south-side windows re-caulked and a fresh coat of paint. And at St. Francis of Assisi, which recently benefited from a power washing, updates to the sound system would infuse the church with joy and make such a difference.

In addition to bridging budgetary shortfalls and making these necessary physical improvements possible – and most importantly – your support of the Grand Annual Collection will help us continue to develop programs for the ongoing spiritual formation of both adults and youth in our parishes.

If your circumstances permit, I have enclosed a contribution card and an envelope that can be returned in the collection basket at church or in the mail. Your home parish is noted on the card and will receive the credit for your contribution. Please make your check payable to your home parish. You can also make a secure online donation at www.whalingcitycatholics.org/donate.

Amid storms of change that have affected our larger world and challenges that have touched our own community, I am more grateful than ever for each and every one of you. Our parishes endure thanks entirely to the loving support of our parishioners. Your generosity, in all its many forms, inspires me every day and is truly the heart of our Whaling City Catholic Community. I ask the Lord to bless our parishes and all the good works we accomplish as a family. Thank you for your support and for your prayerful consideration.

Yours in Christ,
Rev. Mike Racine
